Apply for RU’s Community-based Research & Environmental Justice Course this Summer

This summer of 2025, Roosevelt’s Office of Student Research and Department of Law, Society, & Sustainability will support 8-10 undergraduate students in a Community-based Research and Environmental Justice experience (CREJ). A cohort-based summer research course based here in Chicago, this competitive fellowship includes tuition funding for a 3-credit EXL/research-focused urban sustainability and environmental justice course on selected Fridays (9:30am-1pm) from June 6 through August 1 during RU’s 8-week summer session. In addition to a tuition waiver for the course, students will receive a small stipend to help defray travel costs from RU’s Chicago Campus to our community organization partner. You can . . .

During this summer’s Community-based Research and Environmental Justice course, undergraduate students will participate in a hands-on and field-based introduction to urban sustainability and selected research and analytic methods in the humanities and social sciences. Students will gain experience doing community-based research (CBR) in collaboration with the Southeast Environmental Task Force (SETF), one of Chicago’s oldest grassroots conservation and environmental justice organizations. In addition, they will synthesize their findings and have opportunities to present their work at events such as Roosevelt’s annual Student Research and Inquiry Symposium (RSRIS).

Based in the Hegewisch neighborhood on Chicago’s Southeast Side, the Southeast Environmental Task Force has advocated since the 1980s for the people and ecosystems of the culturally and biologically diverse Calumet industrial region that spans Chicago’s far South Side, near south suburbs, and communities of northwest Indiana. SETF’s current initiatives and activism include several key issues within urban sustainability: climate and environmental justice advocacy; pollution reduction; clean energy policy; land use and sustainable development; green space conservation; and public health.

Student applicants may be from any major and should have completed at least 15 hours of college credit; have earned a C or better in ENG 102; and have an interest in learning about community-based research, urban sustainability, and/or environmental justice.

Eligibility

  • Current Roosevelt University undergraduate student in any college or major (except those graduating in May 2025)
  • At least 15 credit hours completed at the time of application, including earning a C or better in ENG 102 (or, if currently taking ENG 102 this spring, a recommendation from the instructor is required)
  • GPA of at least 2.0 overall (2.5 minimum preferred)
  • Interest in learning about urban sustainability, doing applied research in the humanities and/or social sciences, working collaboratively with a local environmental organization, and exploring the neighborhoods, natural areas, and industrial landscape of Chicago’s historic Southeast Side

Fellowship Requirements and Benefits

  • Participate in an 8-week interdisciplinary hybrid seminar on selected Fridays 9:30am-1pm and online on Blackboard from June 6 through Aug 1. Class meetings will be at RU’s Chicago Campus and at selected field locations on Chicago’s Southeast Side. Online work is required in addition to the scheduled class and field trip sessions.
  • Work effectively as individuals, in small teams, and in collaboration with our community-based organization partner (the Southeast Environmental Task Force).
  • Earn 3 EXL course credits toward graduation (SUST / SOC / POS 262 Environmental Justice).
  • Gain first-hand knowledge of the remarkable people, industrial sites, and natural areas of a truly unique area of Chicago.

Students do not need to register for the course. All students will be notified about their application status once applications are reviewed. Students accepted to the CREJ program will be registered for the course by the Office of Student Research and at that time, tuition will be paid by the OSR.

Friends of Volo Bog Offer 2024 Environmental Scholarship Opportunities

The Friends of Volo Bog is offering an Entering College scholarship and a Continuing College scholarship for $1,500 each to outstanding students interested in pursuing an environmental career.

To be eligible for the Entering College scholarship the applicant must have a permanent Illinois residency and attend high school in Lake, McHenry, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall, or Will Counties,, have a minimum B average for the first three years, and plan to attend an accredited college or university. The applicant should be planning to enter a career directly related to preserving the natural environment.

To be eligible for the Continuing College scholarship the applicant must be currently enrolled in college or university pursing a degree directly related to preserving the natural environment, have a permanent residence in Lake, McHenry, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall, or Will County, have graduated from a high school from one of these counties with a minimum B average, and currently hold a minimum B average in their college studies.

Application MUST be received by March 31st (or post marked by March 28) of this year (2024). Please check Visitor Center hours if dropping off in person as the Visitor Center may be closed on and/or prior to the day of the deadline.

Preparing the Application Package
Please assemble your package in one envelope in the following order:

  1. This Application Form filled out completely (form below).

  2. At least one signed letter of recommendation from a non-relative who is familiar your goals and aptitude.

  3. A one-page essay addressing your motivation for choosing an environmental or natural science career, your related experiences and attributes, such as leadership skills, and your educational goals. 

  4. Sealed official transcripts reflecting your GPA of B or higher.

RU Offers “Four Freedoms” Student Fellowships for 2014-15

The Four Freedoms Fellowship offers Roosevelt University students a unique opportunity to develop leadership, public speaking, and advocacy skills to effect change on critical issues. Throughout the academic year, selected Fellows will participate in a series of interactive trainings to deepen their knowledge of the political landscape, learn effective strategies to influence decision-makers, and be able to powerfully articulate their personal stories as a tool for change. Trainings will take place on Friday mornings at the Chicago Campus starting on Sept. 26th.

Four Freedoms Fellows will be awarded $750 in the form of financial aid that will be divided between the Fall and Spring semesters. Both undergraduate and graduate students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply. Fellows will have the opportunity to take a leadership role in advocacy efforts at Roosevelt and have occasion to represent the University at press conferences or events with elected officials.

Undergrad Research Opportunities at the Field Museum

This summer the Field Museum of Natural History here in the Chicago is offering several Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) fellowships for summer research in the biological sciences. This is a unique and valuable opportunity to do paid (!) summer research in one of the most important natural history research institutions in the world. Please see this website for more information, and note the upcoming deadline of March 15th for applications.

As an undergraduate biology major at Illinois Wesleyan University in the 1980s, I applied for and received two REU summer fellowships. Not only did I earn a generous 3-month stipend and learn a tremendous amount about how science is done in the lab and out in the field, but as I look back on those experiences I now realize how much they helped shape my future career direction and attitudes about science and nature.

EPA Research Fellowship Opportunities for Fall 2012

This fellowship opportunity just crossed my desk. I’m sure the application process is rigorous, but the SUST major at RU qualifies as an eligible program of study, according to my quick scan of the applicant requirements. If you’re entering your junior year (approximately) in the program and have an interest in working at the EPA in the summer, check this out.

Fellowships For Undergraduate Environmental Study
Application Deadline: December 12, 2011

EPA, as part of its Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships program, is offering GRO undergraduate fellowships for bachelor level students in environmental fields of study. Subject to availability of funding, and other applicable considerations, the Agency plans to award approximately 40 new fellowships by July 30, 2012. Eligible students will receive support for their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer of their junior year. The fellowship provides up to $19,700 per academic year of support and $9,500 of support for a three-month summer internship.

Summer Internship Opportunities

I just caught wind of two very cool environmental internship opportunities for this summer — one local (Village of Glenview, IL), the other international (through Columbia University). For those of you who have time and would like to get hands-on experience in sustainability-related work experiences, this is something to check out.

(1) Ecological Restoration Intern
This summer position is with the Village of Glenview, which has an active and progressive natural resource management / environmental restoration program, headed by restoration ecologist Robyn Flakne. Dr. Flakne is a former adjunct professor of science in the College of Professional Studies, and will also be co-leading a field trip with me at the Schaumburg Park District on Sunday, April 10th. This is a terrific opportunity to learn about cutting-edge ecological restoration techniques and earn some bucks in the bargain. The application deadline is April 1st, 2011 (submission by email required).

(2) Summer Ecosystem Experiences for Undergraduates (SEE-U)
Applications are now being accepted for the 2011Summer Ecosystem Experiences for Undergraduates (SEE-U) program, offered by the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation (CERC) at Columbia University’s Earth Institute. SEE-U provides undergraduate students of all majors from all colleges and universities across the country with a global understanding of ecology and environmental sustainability through lectures, labs, and fieldwork carried out in unique natural settings.

– Students earn 6 academic credits in just 5 weeks. 
– No prerequisites required to enroll. 
– Fellowship funding is available through CERC.
