Hello! My name is Dewi Deltoton Lockwood and I’m a junior at Roosevelt university studying to earn my bachelor’s degree in Sustainability Studies with minors in Environmental Science and Political Science. I have always had a strong inner sense of justice. Seeing the impacts that climate change is having on so many aspects of so many people’s lives who never contributed to or benefited from the processes causing climate change has never sat right with me and is why I choose to study sustainability.  I’m thankful for my opportunity to study here at Roosevelt because of its location downtown and its history of prioritizing social justice. The community at Roosevelt is very supportive and surprisingly tight knit; I am proud to be the president of RU Green which is our on-campus sustainability organization which runs events to educate about sustainability and serve our community. I am also lucky to be a sustainability student associate! I am so excited for all the work we have in store, especially our mental health garden.

Greetings! My name is Ricky Milay, a student here at Roosevelt finishing my Sustainability Studies BA this coming May, and as of recently, working on my MA in History. Born and raised in Northern California, I was always just a 15-minute drive from a forest, river, or lake, learning early the importance of sustainable living and conserving our natural resources for future generations. After years of working with environmental agencies and a cross-country move, I jumped at the opportunity to attend the first sustainability studies program in Chicago and become equipped to help build sustainable communities. I’m excited to say that Roosevelt has done just that! I’m now on track to further my education to study environmental law and environmental history after finishing my degrees. This is thanks to the wonderful support from my peers and professors found at Roosevelt.

My name is Linda Phillips, and I am a senior at Roosevelt University with a major in Sustainability Studies and a minor in Digital Marketing, Advertising and PR. This is my second year working as a Sustainability Student Associate in the LSS Department at RU. I hope to combine these two disciplines through pursuing a career in green advertising. On the other hand, I am interested and open to any career in the sustainability and conservation field. The sustainability courses, field trips, and my time as a Roosevelt Sustainability Associate have helped me to round out my educational experience and transition into a professional journey.

Hello, I am Camila Hernandez, and I attend Roosevelt University in Chicago, where I’m a junior majoring in Sustainability Studies and Sociology as well as in the Honors Program. This year I’m serving as Roosevelt’s Student Steward for the Resilience Studies Consortium (RSC), which “unites an international network of universities to advance ‘place-based’ educational opportunities for students from a diversity of backgrounds and passions . . . [and] seeks to empower students as agents of change(from the RSC website). I live a short 20-minute train ride from Downtown Chicago, where I have been consistently surrounded by urban environments. I have always had a connection to nature, largely due to my cultural background and my family. My experience studying sustainability has strengthened my love for the natural environment, pairing my personal values and experiences in an academic setting collaboratively with other students. I enjoy exploring new places and parks around the city, and seeing how nature manifests in cityscapes. I have developed an interest in urban planning, where I hope to use my background in sustainability to explore urban ecology. With the increased threats of climate change and overall instability and uncertainty, resilience is vital. To me, resilience requires collective action and organizing around a cause to promote justice.
