Lester G. Telser (BA Economics ’51) passed away September 3, 2022
Lester Telser received his undergraduate degree from the Roosevelt’s College of Arts & Sciences and
obtained a Ph.D in mathematics, economics and econometrics. After his tour of duty in the Army ended,
he returned to the University of Chicago to teach, where he taught economics for 35 years. It was a
statistics professor at Roosevelt, Norman Rudy, who would introduce him to games theory, an
application that became a life-long interest and the subject of four of the six books that he has written
during his professional career.

Patricia M. Pates Eaton (BM ’60) passed away September 15, 2022
Patricia Pates Eaton, has left her legacy in the music world several times over.
Patricia Pates Eaton was the founder of Three on 3 Music concert series, which brings live music to the
community and produces the Harlem Classical Music Jubilee Festival featuring music of African
American composers and artists. She was retired cofounder of the Brooklyn Ecumenical Chorus of
Bedford Stuyvesant (STAI-VUH-SNT) and retired principal conductor of the New York All-City High School
Chorus. Patricia was the recipient of the Chicago College of Performing Arts Deans Award in 2021.

David B. Spangler passed away August 19, 2022
David Spangler taught at Roosevelt University as an adjunct mathematics professor. David was passionate about the teaching and learning of mathematics for understanding, which drove how he approached professional development for teachers, the university mathematics methods courses that I taught, and in the pre K–12 mathematics curriculum materials that he developed.
David B. Miller passed away June 20, 2022
David Miller served in the US Army of Occupation in Germany 1954-56. Upon discharge David enrolled in the Russian Institute program, Columbia University, New York, where he completed his MA & PhD. David taught at Roosevelt University for 38 years, serving as chair of the history dept. for some years. David was honored with the Seymour N. Logan Chair in History. During his teaching career, he spent a year in the Soviet Union on an academic exchange and another half year teaching at Taejon University, So. Korea.
Theodore L. ‘Ted’ Gross (Honorary ’02) passed away August 16, 2022
During his presidency, Ted implemented several institutional additions, including the development of Roosevelt’s permanent campus in Schaumburg in 1996 – which, at the time, marked the first new comprehensive University campus to be established in Illinois since the late 1960s. Ted was also instrumental in the creation of the Chicago College of Performing Arts and the Marshall Bennett Institute of Real Estate. He led the development of an honors program, for which the Theodore “Ted” Gross Endowed Scholarship in Honors continues to provide financial support to students today. He also increased enrollments to 7,500. A fundraiser extraordinaire, Ted began and grew Roosevelt’s endowment to $35 million, and he led a highly successful $53 million capital campaign.
Alan G. Schwartz passed away December 2, 2022
Alan Schwartz founded Midtown Tennis Club, the world’s largest indoor tennis club, in 1969. Alan was an accomplished player, winning eight National Public Parks Tennis Championships and seven Illinois State Tennis Championships. He had a passion for tennis and has worked tirelessly to grow the game. Alan served on Roosevelt’s Board of Trustees from 1993 to 2014.
