Dear Roosevelt Community,
Like the rest of our country, I am shocked, saddened and angered at the events unfolding in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The police shooting of Jacob Blake and subsequent murder of two protesters are other examples of the polarization of our country and desperate need for systemic reforms in our criminal justice system. My heart goes out to the victims of police brutality and wanton violence, as well as to their families.
Our American history, through to this present day, includes systemic racism and state-sanctioned violence against people of color. The situation in our country is unacceptable and unsustainable. Roosevelt University was founded on the mission of social justice, and we have an obligation to stand in solidarity with those affected and with the protesters who raise their voices, powerfully and peacefully, in order to influence change. A change that must occur.
Please remember that Roosevelt is committed to supporting our mission. We have programs across the University to take steps toward a more equitable society, like our Black Student Equity Fund. This fund supports the success of Black students in their efforts for higher education and advances programming, scholarships and campus events.
You have the ability to affect change in your everyday actions. Join the difficult conversations, listen to other voices and let your voice be heard. Be safe, stay healthy and protect each other.
With warm regards,
Ali R. Malekzadeh, Ph.D.
President of Roosevelt University
