Get Out the Vote!

On this eve of Election Day, I want to join the multitude of voices you’ve undoubtedly heard for months singing the same chorus: VOTE!

If you haven’t already voted early, please be sure to cast your ballot tomorrow. The ability to vote is one of this country’s most important civic rights — by voting in an election, you ensure your voice is heard and show that you support a democratic government. Voting is an invaluable opportunity for you to back political candidates who share your values and support the civil rights of all people.

Think not only of how you alone are affected by legislation — please also consider your fellow human. So many among us are hurt by policies that systematically discourage our ability to vote. As Eric Holder stated at the American Dream Conference, “voting is one of the greatest responsibilities an American has.” He acknowledged the sacrifices of generations before us to secure this right, but emphasized efforts by some to disproportionately suppress votes among minority populations. As a society, we must do better — we must buck our disappointing trend of low voter turnout to establish a government that is more representative of all demographics of society.

In closing, I remind you of Roosevelt’s mission of social justice. Inclusion is at the core of Roosevelt’s legacy and we do not discriminate based on one’s religion, gender, sexual orientation, race, economic status, ethnicity, disability, national origin, or veteran or familial status. By making your voice heard at the polls, you can ensure that society can more adequately reflect the ideals of the American Dream.
