Exploring Chicago: West Loop

Located just west of the Chicago River, the West Loop neighborhood is where the infamous Chicago Fire of 1871 started. Legend says a cow kicked over a lantern and started the fire, but the true origin has never been confirmed. The fire caused about $200 million in damages and left Chicago devastated. West Loop is now home to McDonald’s Global Headquarters, Google Chicago Headquarters, and several Michelin Star restaurants. Lucky for us college students, it’s also home to several cheap eats and activities. Here’s a list of some:

B_Line:

The B_Line Chicago is a public art display that dates back to the 1970s. It’s a free, mile long strip of art that gives you an abundance of photo ops. They even host cool events there- many of them include music, light shows, and live-art. The events are usually free, so be on the lookout and come on out!

Tip: Bring comfy shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. Some of the murals have sidewalks in front of them, but most don’t.

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY and a steadfast “all together now” energy can produce magic—we’ve seen it with our own two eyes. The results achieved are only as good as the members of that community. In the case of The B_Line, it’s been a case study in building an entirely new community seeded by artists and creatives and sustained by the neighbors that interface with the project. And we’ve only just begun. Resurrecting this community effort from its 1971 legacy of art and community events hasn’t been easy, but it’s definitely been worth it. Huge shout out to @akhmerovproduction for this awesome video! #proud #bline #thebline #blinechicago #fultonmarket #fultonmarketdistrict #hubbardstreetmurals #chicago #art #streetart #community

Emporium Fulton Market:

Emporium Arcade Bar considers itself Chicago’s Original Arcade Bar. There’s pinball machines, skee-ball, pool, air hockey, and vintage arcade games. Most of the games take one token, which is equivalent to $0.25.  They have local craft beer and commercial beers as well as cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks on the menu. **You have to be 21+ to get in, sorry youngsters.

Tip: This place gets crowded in the evenings. If you want to avoid the crowds and wait times for games, come by around lunch.

Kuma’s Corner:

Kuma’s Corner is a  Chicago-born, heavy metal themed burger joint. They only work with local suppliers and host fundraisers for different charities every month.

Punch Bowl Social:

Punch Bowl Social has several locations across the United States and is meant to be a social hangout place where you can unwind with friends. Bowling is only $12 per hour per person and the shoe rental is included! There’s also karaoke, table games, arcade games, and virtual reality. They serve food, snacks, and drinks. **It’s 21+ after 10 p.m.

Tip: Don’t forget socks! You can purchase socks there for $7… but why would you when you can bring your own?

McDonald’s Global Menu Restaurant:

West Loop is home to McDonald’s Global Headquarters which also includes its Global Menu Restaurant. The rotating menu features items that are offered in McDonald’s locations around the world!

Tip: Some of the items sell out, but you can save yourself a trip of disappointment by checking the Uber Eats menu before you visit.
