Read Aloud Tips

  • Introduce the book by discussing the era of the Civil War and what this time was like for Black Americans and those grieving their lost loved ones.

  • Have students spend time observing the illustrations. At times, show the illustrations prior to reading the page to have students reflect and predict.

  • Compare and contract the Memorial Day in the book to Memorial Day in modern day. What is the same? What is different? Why was this holiday founded?

“Without glossing over important facts, Weatherford (Dreams for a Daughter) tells the historical events of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre in language appropriate for young readers.” – Publisher’s Weekly
