00:01
okay go for it well good afternoon
00:05
everyone I’m Kristy Kotek and I am
00:09
in the Alumni Relations Office at
00:10
Roosevelt University as I also shared I
00:14
am an alum as well from the Masters in
00:16
training and development program proud
00:18
rmu alum an employee and Joe our
00:22
presenter this afternoon is also an alum
00:24
from the same program so we’re very
00:27
excited to have him here just um a quick
00:30
a few things to make sure that this
00:32
presentation goes smoothly and that
00:34
everybody can participate just please
00:37
that we ask that everyone kindly just
00:39
keep their mic muted throughout the
00:42
presentation just to avoid any
00:44
background noise or disruption I know
00:46
we’re all very much
00:48
you know Zumo most experts at this point
00:51
but just wanted to share that quick
00:53
reminder and then you can also use the
00:56
chat box feature for questions
00:58
throughout this next hour Joe will be
01:03
you know be addressing questions
01:06
throughout and then we’ll save some time
01:07
at the end of course for any additional
01:09
questions that you might have or
01:10
anything that we that we miss but we’ll
01:12
try to address them as we as we go
01:14
through the hour and again thank you so
01:17
much for joining we’re very excited to
01:19
have you here it’s great to have so many
01:22
from our community join us this is for
01:25
me I think a really important topic I’ve
01:28
been in Advan LinkedIn user and advocate
01:32
for many years and I know the the value
01:36
that it’s brought to my life so I’m so
01:39
excited that Joe has really graciously
01:43
accepted to join us this afternoon and
01:46
share his insights and expert and
01:48
expertise regarding LinkedIn so as I
01:52
share jaws our Roosevelt alum a recent
01:55
graduate from the Masters of training
01:57
and development program he has a
01:59
background in training development and
02:01
with a focus on educational technology
02:03
adult learning theory and creative
02:06
software he is currently a customer
02:09
service
02:10
the customer success manager at LinkedIn
02:12
one thing I also recently learned about
02:15
Joe is that he joined the social impact
02:17
team on LinkedIn so he’s really doing
02:20
some some great work all around at
02:22
LinkedIn and I think you will certainly
02:26
see over the next hour Joe’s just
02:29
passion not only for LinkedIn but also
02:32
and just helping to inspire and educate
02:35
others so Joe thank you again so much
02:38
for joining us I’m gonna go ahead and
02:40
turn the mic over to you oh well thank
02:42
you for a great introduction Kristi
02:45
thank you everybody on the call today on
02:48
the webinar for giving me your time I
02:52
want to encourage everybody here to
02:54
network together I think I bet rim that
02:56
a little bit earlier but these are your
02:59
this is your network here and these are
03:02
gonna be the people that you bounce
03:03
ideas off of that you grow with you know
03:07
advancing your career has a lot to do
03:10
with sharpening your skills and just
03:13
finding what you’re passionate about
03:15
with other people and continuing to
03:17
practice and grow so definitely use that
03:22
this part of your day to get to know
03:25
other people if you can feel free to
03:28
share links to your LinkedIn profile
03:30
here you can also go on LinkedIn and
03:33
look up alumni I’ll show you how to do
03:35
that I want to share some resources with
03:38
you or let you know what resources
03:39
you’ll have available to you after the
03:43
presentation that way you know as I go
03:46
through content you don’t have to worry
03:48
about retaining everything because there
03:50
are going to be some resources for you
03:52
as well so I’m gonna show you the
03:54
resources that I’m going to share with
03:56
you created a link that Christie will
03:59
give to everybody who signed up this
04:02
link is going to contain resources one
04:04
I’m gonna encourage everybody to also be
04:08
a mentor to other people who are trying
04:10
to advance their career a common theme
04:12
of today is that in being a mentor
04:15
giving informational interviews to other
04:17
people you’re also going to sharpen your
04:20
skills your elevator speech if you will
04:23
so
04:23
giving back also really helps you
04:25
there’s a symbiotic relationship there
04:28
I’m gonna give you the entire deck from
04:30
today’s presentation so you’ll have that
04:33
depending on some of the questions that
04:35
we have in the dialogue that we have we
04:37
may not cover every single slide here so
04:40
rest assured that these resources are
04:42
going to be available for you I’ve got
04:46
some resources that you can print off
04:48
and if you’re like me sometimes it’s
04:51
nice to just print things off take a pen
04:53
and start crossing things off on a paper
04:56
and this is something that you can print
04:58
off here so this resource is available
04:59
for you and last I have a little deck
05:05
that I created on building your brand
05:07
this is something that you can print off
05:09
again more resources there’s also a
05:12
really great article that I’m going to
05:14
talk about in the presentation that you
05:18
can check out here so lots of resources
05:20
for you and before I jump in LinkedIn is
05:26
just like any other it’s like a lot of
05:30
things out there where you can’t just
05:31
try to eat the elephant in one day don’t
05:33
expect to create your LinkedIn profile
05:36
in one day or even in one week it’s a
05:39
work in progress maybe set aside 20 to
05:42
30 minutes where you work on your
05:44
LinkedIn profile check out other
05:47
people’s profiles informational
05:50
interviews are great where you can get a
05:52
hold of somebody call them and talk
05:54
maybe meet with them in person have
05:56
coffee when that’s gonna be an option
05:58
again but LinkedIn lets you do this
06:00
stuff where you can just search for
06:02
profiles look people’s profiles up and
06:04
learn about their journey and others can
06:08
learn from your journey as well on
06:09
LinkedIn so this is an ongoing process
06:12
don’t feel the pressure to have to get
06:14
this right on the first try so as we
06:18
jump in to our job seeker session here
06:22
today and how to build your network and
06:24
advance your career on LinkedIn I wanted
06:26
a level set with you on the mission and
06:28
vision of LinkedIn at LinkedIn our
06:32
mission is to connect the world’s
06:33
professionals to make a more productive
06:36
and successful
06:37
our vision is to create economic
06:41
opportunity for every member of the
06:43
global workforce now that’s a big vision
06:45
but it’s our North Star and when you’re
06:48
on LinkedIn you can just imagine that
06:50
you can also create economic opportunity
06:53
for other people you can help create
06:56
that for yourself by connecting and
06:58
building your network so I’ll show you
06:59
how to begin this journey we’ve got an
07:04
overview of what LinkedIn is we’re gonna
07:07
show you how to build your profile build
07:09
your professional network so grow that
07:11
Network we’ll look at how to connect and
07:15
give you some strategies for connecting
07:16
with others on LinkedIn and then we’ll
07:18
show you how to search and apply for
07:21
jobs and I got a little bit of extra
07:22
credit that you may want to follow the
07:25
resources and if we don’t get to that
07:27
spot but there’ll be a little extra for
07:29
those who are ready to go above and
07:31
beyond oops so when we think about
07:36
LinkedIn I’ll just cover this briefly
07:39
there’s a lot of social networks out
07:40
there and it’s important to get an idea
07:44
what you can do on LinkedIn and what it
07:46
is and what it is when you think of
07:48
social media Facebook is where you can
07:52
post hey I like donuts another one would
07:57
be snapchat where it’s like hey you can
07:58
watch me eat the donut Instagram is kind
08:02
of a place where you can say look here’s
08:04
a cool photo of one Pinterest might show
08:07
the entire recipe Spotify you’re
08:11
listening to donuts and then whatsapp
08:14
would be does anyone want a donut where
08:17
you’re having this conversation together
08:19
so pardon the analogy to donuts but just
08:21
something to kind of give you an idea
08:23
these are what other social networks do
08:25
on LinkedIn you would be using that more
08:29
for look this is a career goal I want to
08:33
one day own my own franchise I’m looking
08:37
for a job in a certain area you want to
08:40
be able to display your experience show
08:44
your top skills and then even show
08:47
recommendations that you can get on
08:49
LinkedIn LinkedIn is a great play
08:52
– host others other recommendations that
08:57
you get from colleagues or people that
08:59
you’ve worked with even in school on
09:01
your LinkedIn so this is really just a
09:03
professional mindset and I think that
09:05
really helps a lot of people to know
09:07
that this is a place where I can be
09:09
professional and I’m not going to get
09:11
some of the the other social network
09:14
aspects that might be noise when you’re
09:17
trying to really grow professionally so
09:21
when we talk about building your
09:23
professional network and connecting to
09:25
jobs this is a great place for it we’ve
09:27
got 50 million plus employers on
09:29
LinkedIn and there’s a million with
09:32
millions of open opportunities for jobs
09:34
there’s six hundred and ninety million
09:36
professionals in over 200 countries on
09:40
LinkedIn we have 2.9 million groups on
09:44
LinkedIn these are groups where people
09:46
go to focus and talk about their
09:49
professional interests so LinkedIn is a
09:51
great spot for you to learn and grow and
09:55
help others as well
09:57
9 out of 10 employers are using LinkedIn
10:00
during the hiring process they may go to
10:02
take a peek at your profile they may go
10:05
to learn more about what top skills they
10:09
can expect to see from other profiles
10:11
but it’s 9 out of 10 are using LinkedIn
10:16
during the hiring process and by the way
10:21
I did see a couple post their link to
10:24
their LinkedIn on the chat so awesome
10:27
thanks for doing that
10:29
[Music]
10:31
and there’s some key terms that we’ll
10:33
use today I actually don’t think any of
10:36
these I don’t think I really need to
10:37
read any of these I was actually gonna
10:40
pull that slide out sorry about that I
10:42
won’t go over anything that we don’t
10:44
need – time is precious feel free to ask
10:47
questions by the way as we continue and
10:49
I will be sure to check in on the chat
10:51
pod so when we look at building your
10:53
LinkedIn profile we want I’m gonna go
10:57
through four main steps here first you
11:01
got to have an account so if you don’t
11:02
have an account they’re really easy to
11:04
build over the years LinkedIn has
11:07
optimized this process so it really does
11:09
guide you and help you I’ve had some of
11:12
the steps in the prompts through this
11:14
process helped me create so it’s really
11:16
a user-friendly interface you can
11:19
download the app on the App Store the
11:23
Apple App Store or the Android App Store
11:26
or you can just do it from a desktop you
11:28
pick whatever is easier for you a common
11:34
question that I get is what’s the
11:36
difference between a LinkedIn profile
11:38
and a resume so the difference between
11:40
the two is when you look at your profile
11:45
your profile is going to be looked at by
11:48
every potential employer out there your
11:51
profile is also gonna be looked at by
11:52
colleagues it’s also gonna be looked at
11:55
by potential mentees this is a great way
11:59
for other people to learn and kind of
12:01
get like this digital informational
12:03
interview from you so one thing that I
12:06
started to recognize that with my
12:08
LinkedIn profile was that I was telling
12:10
this story it was me building a brand
12:12
but when when I would work with students
12:16
they could look at it and go oh Joe went
12:19
from here to here to here and he was
12:22
able to do that through learning going
12:25
to school for this and that he was able
12:27
to learn by keeping his skills up so
12:31
LinkedIn is really a great way for other
12:32
people to check out kind of your journey
12:34
and your brand
12:38
and I kind of mentioned that you can
12:42
have recommendations on there so if you
12:43
you can request recommendations from
12:45
others it’s also just a place for others
12:48
to learn and interact with you so I kind
12:51
of touched on that too and again I keep
12:53
seeing some links to other LinkedIn’s
12:57
here feel free to add each other on
12:59
there I think it’s a really great idea
13:01
to sharpen your skills that way now when
13:06
you think about a resume and you think
13:09
about summarizing yourself on a profile
13:12
this is an article that’s in the links
13:14
that I’m sharing with you it’s
13:16
interesting when you look at this little
13:19
headline that we our editor came up with
13:22
Leonardo da Vinci is a detail-oriented
13:25
self-starter with drawing experience it
13:28
kind of hits home when you think about
13:30
Leonardo da Vinci you don’t think about
13:32
it being worded that way so this is a
13:36
part of a process on LinkedIn where you
13:39
can speak authentically about who you
13:42
are and really showcase some of your
13:44
work let your actions speak louder than
13:47
your words in some cases so really cool
13:49
that you can showcase media on LinkedIn
13:52
as well and you don’t have to put
13:54
yourself in this small little box here
13:59
you can check that article out so it all
14:03
starts with a photo and you can see here
14:06
some of the stats you’re 21 more times
14:09
more likely or what is it members with
14:12
profile photos received 21 times more
14:15
views and you’re nine times more likely
14:17
to get a connection request it really
14:19
just helps people know that you’re an
14:21
actual person and then gives them an
14:23
idea for who you are one of my tips here
14:28
is that I’ve always been kind of a video
14:32
nerd so I love editing videos and I’m
14:35
always learning about that just I was
14:37
always interested in that since a kid
14:39
I’ve found that the cameras that we have
14:41
on our phones you can’t see it but
14:44
cameras that we have on our phones these
14:46
days can be just as good as some of the
14:48
professional photographers out there
14:51
by all means support your local
14:53
professional photographer but if you
14:55
don’t have the money or time to go get
14:57
that done you may just be better off
14:59
just borrowing a camera from a friend
15:02
that has one of those really nice camera
15:04
phones they can do the portrait mode to
15:07
blur out your background for you and you
15:09
you can get a really nice professional
15:11
image from some of these premium
15:13
smartphones so by all means if you don’t
15:15
have that premium smartphone you didn’t
15:17
want to spend $1200 on a smartphone you
15:19
can borrow it from somebody else and get
15:21
that really nice blurred background
15:24
always go for face up you want to really
15:27
have predominantly your face in the
15:29
photo and then wear what you would like
15:32
to wear at your job that’s always a good
15:36
tip for you you don’t have to over dress
15:37
or under dress wear what you’d be
15:40
comfortable wearing in the job that you
15:41
want or have and Christy how we do it in
15:45
the chat pod we do have a question and
15:47
dance asking if there’s anything you can
15:49
touch on in terms of privacy settings
15:51
for the profile fit pick from the ta
15:54
side not view certain profile photos
15:59
unless we are connected Oh
16:03
ta side what’s ta stand for Dan can you
16:08
clarify position okay we cannot view
16:16
certain profiles and that may be for if
16:20
you’re using the talent product I’m not
16:23
sure if they have that limited on the
16:25
talent side at the end of the
16:27
presentation I do have a little bit on
16:30
privacy if you’re curious about that and
16:32
we can touch base on additional
16:36
questions that I’m not able to get to
16:38
hear but good question so to edit your
16:45
profile the the LinkedIn profile is
16:48
super easy to edit you’ll find that in
16:52
the top area here where it says me I’m
16:55
trying to highlight that for you here
16:56
you just click on the me area there and
16:58
then you’ll be able to begin editing so
17:01
click me and you’ll be able to add your
17:03
location
17:05
location your work experience intern
17:08
experience if you’re just getting
17:09
started off volunteer experience
17:12
education skills and the program or
17:15
organizations that you’re working with
17:17
highly highly recommend that if you are
17:20
doing volunteer experience that you take
17:22
advantage of highlighting that work it
17:25
can also be a great way to promote the
17:27
work that those organizations are doing
17:30
and you may find people that are share a
17:33
commonality in in helping in those
17:36
volunteer areas so anything you can do
17:38
to really Express who you are and then
17:41
build connections with other people you
17:43
never know what might spark a
17:44
conversation for work experience I
17:48
didn’t go back all the way to when I
17:51
used to wait tables actually I’m
17:53
considering changing that because I want
17:55
I want students and those people who are
17:58
just starting off to be able to connect
18:00
and say oh well Joe started off here and
18:01
he was able to get work his way up so
18:05
I’m considering changing that but
18:06
there’s no hard and fast rules there
18:08
you’re able to share what you’re
18:10
comfortable sharing on LinkedIn and you
18:12
don’t have to go back to with somebody
18:15
like me I probably had like 15 jobs in
18:19
the past a lot of summer jobs and gigs
18:21
like that so I don’t list all those
18:23
things I kind of just list hey this is
18:25
the professional things that makes sense
18:27
to show on my LinkedIn profile totally
18:30
up to you there in editing your profile
18:35
you have a headline and this is an
18:38
opportunity for you to show what you are
18:41
and not just what you do when people are
18:45
reading about you and these are you may
18:47
have seen these I’ll highlight this
18:48
here’s an example so this person put
18:51
their headline and again you can take a
18:53
peek at these later on the deck Design
18:57
Thinking meets social impact meets
18:59
business strategy so this is a quick way
19:02
to know what this person does some
19:06
people keep these very simple and in
19:08
this example curriculum designer and
19:10
facilitator so you have this catchy you
19:14
can have this kind of tell what you do
19:17
it’s almost like Anna Bree
19:19
elevator pitch I think mine right now is
19:22
just says that I help academic
19:25
institutions with learning something to
19:27
that effect
19:28
so that headline just gives people an
19:30
idea of what you do professionally and I
19:34
want to say that’s an art form because
19:36
I’ve I’m always thinking about how I can
19:38
fine-tune that to really tell people
19:40
what I’m passionate about and then just
19:44
raise interest in showing what I care
19:46
about
19:49
any questions in the chat bar there
19:51
Christie
19:54
not at the center all right and Dan I’m
19:57
sorry I could have answered that
19:58
question right off the bat but I will
20:00
circle back to that so when you look at
20:04
your profile there is a summary – so you
20:06
have a headline just kind of a quick
20:09
quick blurb about what you do and with
20:12
with your profession a summary is going
20:16
to be where you have one to two
20:18
sentences about who you are and then
20:21
three to five sentences about your
20:23
experience and your top skills and key
20:26
passions and then follow that up with
20:28
one to two sentences about your future
20:31
goals and how other members can engage
20:33
with you this is just a guideline but I
20:36
can tell you it’s super useful to look
20:38
at this so by all means take a peek at
20:41
this and have a kinda like a checklist I
20:43
would put this on my checklist of things
20:45
to have um you could have followed this
20:48
verbatim and it could be really helpful
20:50
but there’s no right or wrong way to
20:52
have your summary this is just your
20:54
brand and who you are I’ve seen people
20:56
do a story about how they were inspired
20:59
younger when they were kids like you
21:02
know I grew up with a digital camera in
21:05
my pocket and it inspired me to do this
21:07
that and the other really showing people
21:09
how you got on your journey why you care
21:11
about what you care about and just
21:14
telling them who you are professionally
21:16
this is another art form to me I like to
21:20
look at other people’s summaries I
21:22
really like to look at people who work
21:24
at LinkedIn to try to see how they
21:27
express themselves and and that’s kind
21:31
of how I my strategies I I might spend
21:33
twenty minutes so we just kind of
21:35
looking at other people summaries
21:37
looking at their experience these are
21:39
free informational interviews in a
21:42
digital format and then if I’m inspired
21:44
to reach out to them I will reach out to
21:46
them so let’s talk about building your
21:53
professional network we’re gonna also do
21:55
this in four steps so I’ve got some good
21:57
visuals here so 50% of hires result from
22:02
a personal connection and I think this
22:05
speaks Bali
22:06
– why we go one of the great reasons
22:09
about being a part of alumni and it
22:12
speaks to one of the great reasons to
22:14
get to know other people because you
22:16
never know who might be able to point
22:19
you in the right direction go hey Joe
22:21
you’re really talented in this area you
22:22
might want to talk to this person and it
22:27
also speaks to when you think about
22:29
expanding your network and helping
22:30
others out I mentioned being a mentor
22:33
I’ll show you in a little bit through
22:35
some programs that LinkedIn that we’re
22:37
passionate about helping connect people
22:39
who don’t have the opportunity to have
22:41
those connections so yeah building your
22:44
network is a really important now the
22:50
power of networking so your first degree
22:53
connections usually these are the people
22:55
who are going to recommend you to
22:58
somebody else for a job everyone has a
23:02
network you might not even realize it
23:04
every time you meet an acquaintance you
23:07
volunteer in a community or through any
23:10
other social activity networking is
23:12
going to be a key factor in career
23:14
advancement
23:15
and I think I mentioned 50% of workers
23:19
currently employed found their job
23:20
through that personal connection so
23:22
again feel free to throw those links and
23:25
this is a great opportunity to get to
23:27
know each other and you never know when
23:29
someone might say hey I know a perfect
23:31
opportunity for you but going beyond
23:34
that first degree connection we have our
23:36
second degree connections here so your
23:39
second degree connections are important
23:42
your network is you know it’s going to
23:44
consist of strong connections these are
23:47
the people that you know well and you
23:48
interact with often you’re gonna have
23:50
some weak connections some acquaintances
23:52
some people that you might not know
23:54
personally but you have kind of a shared
23:56
background and interest in mutual
23:58
connections these are people that are
24:01
great to have on LinkedIn if you know
24:04
that you have that common interest well
24:05
they may post something and you go oh
24:07
that’s a great article I should read
24:08
that or they may post something that
24:11
just inspires you and maybe they become
24:15
closer in your network
24:17
so on LinkedIn your first degree
24:19
connections are people that you’re
24:20
already connected to second degree
24:22
connections are people that you share
24:24
connections with while third degree
24:27
connections are connected to your second
24:30
degree so there’s even another degree
24:31
here and LinkedIn will tell you these
24:34
things as I tend to browse through
24:36
LinkedIn to learn about others
24:38
professions where they came from you can
24:41
click on it and LinkedIn will tell you
24:43
how you’re connected and I want to use
24:49
this opportunity to talk about the
24:51
network gap so LinkedIn we’re committed
24:54
to closing the network gap the network
24:57
gap it’s it’s the advantage that some
24:59
individuals have over others as a result
25:02
of who they know and I think we’ve all
25:04
experienced that where you feel like you
25:05
can’t get into the club with
25:09
professional network online like
25:11
LinkedIn and the whole point of us is to
25:14
connect other people so consider
25:17
consider not only how you may have how
25:20
you have felt being locked out of a
25:21
network but consider building your
25:24
network and letting in someone who you
25:26
might mentor and think of the advantages
25:31
that you can afford somebody else
25:34
something that I think is important is
25:38
we call the +1 pledge but it’s broken
25:42
down in three different areas where you
25:43
just give your time to somebody else it
25:46
doesn’t have to be a ton of time
25:47
Rozsival has a great program that I’m
25:49
linking to as well where you give your
25:51
time but when you give your time to
25:53
somebody else think of how you sharpen
25:55
your skills we’ve all heard of the
25:58
elevator pitch but if a student or
26:01
somebody that you mentor comes to you
26:03
and you have this career conversation
26:05
with them you’re sharing your
26:06
experiences with them you’re sharpening
26:08
that elevator pitch so now when you have
26:10
to interview it kind of rolls off the
26:12
tongue a little bit faster it’s sharper
26:15
you get to sleep on some of the things
26:16
that you’ve thought about and then
26:18
realize hey these are the key things
26:19
that I want to share about Who I am it
26:21
really helps you build your brand
26:24
recognize your talents so think about
26:27
giving your time give your talent and
26:29
then giving your network so
26:31
not only when you give your network to
26:34
somebody else you also you learn how to
26:37
ask and build and get into another
26:39
network too so it’s a really cool idea
26:41
to build them to give to others as you
26:44
learn to kind of do the same thing
26:46
you’re learning to break in as well the
26:48
world’s about has a really cool
26:49
professional mentoring program that is
26:52
in the link to the resources that I’m
26:54
gonna give you consider giving your time
26:58
and I did see a question in the chat pod
27:02
what is your take on accepting
27:04
connections you do not know and have
27:07
never met if they request you outside
27:09
places if they request kind of outside
27:12
of your network my philosophy on that is
27:15
I generally I like to accept connections
27:18
from people that I do know and not
27:21
accepting it doesn’t mean that you don’t
27:23
want to interact with that person but if
27:24
they don’t tell me why they wanted to
27:26
connect then I don’t know why they want
27:28
to connect so you know I definitely give
27:31
priority to connecting with people and
27:33
messaging with people who tell me why
27:35
they want to connect so just consider
27:38
you know if it seems like a low effort
27:40
then you know you’re not obligated to
27:43
connect with them maybe you want to keep
27:44
your network tight so that you know this
27:47
is a professional platform you’re trying
27:49
to advance yourself and help others who
27:51
are interested in doing that perhaps I
27:54
might add that if they don’t add a
27:56
message you could ask like hey you know
27:58
I’m we haven’t met before you could
28:01
solicit from them if you feel like they
28:02
just haven’t learned how to ask some of
28:04
those questions I think that’s kind of
28:06
based off of your own discretion there
28:09
but feel free to use your own discretion
28:11
good question so here’s an example of
28:15
reaching out to somebody else and in
28:18
this example let’s say that our
28:22
character here wanted to meet this guy
28:24
here so hi Dan I found your profile
28:28
through a mutual connection I’m
28:31
currently exploring career paths and
28:33
technology industry and I admire your
28:35
experience I’d love to join your network
28:37
these things always get me I always
28:39
accept these kinds of conversations
28:42
sometimes I’m you know working at
28:45
LinkedIn I get a lot of requests to be
28:47
honest but so it takes me some time to
28:49
catch up with I would also add that if
28:52
you’re reaching out to somebody else do
28:54
not take offense if they don’t reply
28:56
immediately they may be super busy so
28:59
don’t be offended at all when I was
29:02
working to get a job at LinkedIn I had a
29:06
friend who already worked here but there
29:08
was a few people I reached out to you
29:09
who just didn’t have the time to reach
29:11
back out to me and yeah no worries
29:14
– if you think about it a lot of times
29:17
you want an informational interview and
29:19
you’re able to take a peek at their
29:20
profile so you’re already getting some
29:22
good information there but keep at it
29:26
so to find to start off with when you’re
29:30
on LinkedIn you really want to take the
29:32
low-hanging fruit and these are people
29:34
that you’re already connected with this
29:36
is going to help you build out your
29:37
network so LinkedIn does a great job of
29:39
telling you hey you might be connected
29:41
to this person or you might be connected
29:42
to another person so try to find people
29:45
that you’re already connected with and
29:47
and just get that nice foundation there
29:49
as you begin to build out that way
29:52
you’ll begin to get the benefit of those
29:53
second degree and third degree
29:55
connections you can search for new
30:00
connections I like to research people
30:03
who work at a certain company if I’m if
30:06
if I was looking outside when I was
30:09
looking at LinkedIn as a potential
30:11
employer I looked up people who worked
30:12
there
30:12
it was curious what things they posted
30:15
so I would look up with the search box
30:17
up top here names and then you could
30:20
change like filters location companies
30:24
and then there’s just some additional
30:25
filters these are
30:26
really handy my recommendation with
30:29
these filters is to play with those
30:31
filters because you know you don’t have
30:34
to have a master plan when you do that
30:36
you can totally just browse and get to
30:37
know what some of these filters are and
30:39
then maybe a month from now you go oh
30:40
yeah I played with that I’m gonna check
30:42
that out so play with those filters as
30:45
you begin to build your network when you
30:52
search for new connections you know
30:55
after you click connect you can send
30:57
your invite immediately and I think I
30:59
mentioned this already it’s always
31:01
beneficial to add that note in there I
31:03
do have a habit if I work with somebody
31:05
I probably won’t say anything like hey I
31:08
work with you I’ll just send a
31:10
connection they usually know why I want
31:12
to connect with them I want to see their
31:13
posts I want to see what they’re up to I
31:15
would love to be connect with them and
31:17
they kind of get that so it use your
31:19
discretion but if it’s someone brand-new
31:21
always send them a little note now
31:25
expanding your network strategically
31:28
based on people that you don’t know look
31:30
for commonalities now you don’t have to
31:34
have a commonality with somebody but be
31:37
mindful that you know there’s probably
31:40
some some things that you have an
31:42
interest in that you share together you
31:45
may be able to find somebody that has
31:46
goals or volunteer for something that
31:49
you you think is interesting so make
31:52
sure when you read through it they like
31:53
oh you can connect to these things and
31:55
then mention them I really like that
31:57
these two tips are these little tips
32:00
down here so what should you say to them
32:02
like okay you have these commonalities
32:05
here but just let them know hey this is
32:07
who you are tell them about how that
32:10
search went why you came across their
32:12
profile and then tell them how they can
32:14
help you that last one tell them how
32:17
they can help you it’s going to give
32:20
them an actionable item that way they
32:22
don’t have to guess so try to remove
32:23
some of the guesswork for them and there
32:26
will be a little bit more likely to
32:28
reply kind of reducing that cognitive
32:30
load of who is this person and what am I
32:33
supposed to do this is always nice this
32:36
would be kind of a nice one pager for
32:38
you if you do print out this deck
32:40
highlight this part so next up let’s
32:48
talk about using your network on
32:50
LinkedIn to connect to opportunity will
32:53
look at messaging connections which
32:55
we’ve kind of talked about already
32:57
informational interviews requesting
33:00
referrals recommendations and then
33:02
adding value and engaging so LinkedIn
33:06
members are four times more likely to
33:08
get hired at companies where they have a
33:11
connection and it makes sense once you
33:14
have a connection there you begin to
33:15
understand their culture you can speak
33:17
to those things during an interview
33:20
LinkedIn was an important part of when I
33:22
got my foot in the door in training and
33:25
development
33:26
I remember the job was posted and I was
33:31
I was interested in it
33:32
and I immediately found everybody that
33:35
worked in that department and I looked
33:38
up their LinkedIn and I just studied
33:39
studied studied and I was trying to
33:41
imagine myself I had a hard time
33:43
imagining myself in that role even
33:45
though I thought it would be really cool
33:46
but when I was able to look up their
33:48
profiles and go okay this guy does that
33:51
she does this able to connect a few dots
33:53
and I just messaged a few people one
33:56
person replied to me and had an
33:57
informational interview with me that day
34:00
actually I was shocked that they replied
34:02
and I remember when they replied back
34:05
they said hey I’m gonna be in Schaumburg
34:07
and I said and they said do you want to
34:09
just stop by and I said yes and I
34:12
remember that was like a two-hour drive
34:13
for me but I wasn’t gonna pass the
34:15
opportunity up to chat with that person
34:18
and to add a little bit more to that
34:21
story we talked we ended up talking
34:24
about basketball Larry Bird I remember
34:27
we connected on basketball wasn’t
34:29
expecting any of this stuff to happen
34:30
and I think he said something to the
34:34
hiring manager and then of course the
34:36
rest of the research was on me but it
34:39
really I think I got that foot in the
34:40
door of my last job because of linked
34:42
and in a super nice person who was able
34:45
to give me an informational interview
34:47
wow that’s a great powerful story Joe
34:50
I’ve heard so many stories like that
34:52
where LinkedIn is
34:53
such a great role in their lives and
34:55
I’ve experienced that personally too a
34:57
question came in from pearl is it true
35:00
that you can send out 30,000 invitations
35:03
to connect with people and maybe the
35:06
free connection request is what pearls
35:08
you know I don’t know if there’s a limit
35:10
to the amount that you can send 30,000
35:13
is pretty
35:14
that’s a huge number so I’ve never heard
35:19
you can’t do it in bulk I know that and
35:21
I don’t know of any limit to sending
35:24
invites so just send invites to people
35:26
that you know I don’t think that you’ll
35:29
ever reach a limit I’m definitely going
35:32
back to that advice where tell them why
35:35
you’re reaching out learn about them and
35:37
then tell them how you can help you but
35:40
you shouldn’t run into any limitations
35:45
alright keep those questions coming
35:47
thanks pearl and when we talk about
35:50
informational interviews I’m not sure
35:53
it’s with you when I had that
35:55
informational interview the one that I’m
35:58
referencing in the story I didn’t think
36:00
of it as an informational interview it
36:03
was more of me just I just all I knew is
36:06
that I didn’t know enough and then I
36:08
wanted to know more an informational
36:10
interview is the opportunity for you to
36:12
learn more and when you look at this
36:14
example here this is a really great
36:16
example so I’ll read this to you in this
36:19
example says hey Aaron I’m currently
36:22
exploring careers in communication I
36:24
admire your experience your
36:26
accomplishments in the industry I’d
36:28
appreciate the opportunity to hear about
36:30
your career your career journey we
36:33
should be available for 20 minutes over
36:35
the phone or in person look forward to
36:37
hearing from you so really just keeping
36:39
it tight concise again you’re giving
36:42
them that action item and telling them
36:44
why you want to learn more and just a
36:48
good example there you’re looking to
36:51
gain advice for your career you maybe
36:53
you want to learn more about the
36:54
industry for me it was learning and
36:56
development I never had never officially
36:58
done a training position I had done my
37:01
own little workshops but I had never run
37:02
in anything official so asking that
37:05
question like can you can I learn a
37:06
little bit more about how you got there
37:08
and what it’s like how do you like it
37:10
what’s the culture like would I be a
37:12
good fit you can start to ask some of
37:13
those questions so that’s a good
37:17
recommendation on how you can get your
37:20
foot in the door with somebody else to
37:22
learn more about what they do when you
37:27
request a referral so here’s a an
37:30
interesting fact so more than 60% of
37:32
workforce has referred somebody at their
37:35
company and many companies actually give
37:37
rewards if you refer somebody because
37:38
it’s hard to find good talent when
37:40
somebody knows somebody is solid they
37:42
can recruit them in they reward that so
37:46
referrals are powerful on LinkedIn you
37:49
can request a referral and what that
37:52
will do is it’ll put on your profile and
37:56
actually so there’s a couple ways to do
37:57
that a referral might be where you ask
37:59
somebody to just kind of tell somebody
38:01
at work there’s also something on your
38:04
profile so if you look at my profile I
38:06
have got a couple of recommendations
38:08
this is where I would reach out to a
38:10
manager and say hey would you mind just
38:13
endure or give me a recommendation on
38:15
LinkedIn so that others can see the
38:18
quality of work that I did and I’ll talk
38:22
about that in a bit but this is just
38:24
some advice won’t read this one to you
38:26
but asking for a referral can be really
38:29
powerful and some just quick tips here
38:32
make sure that you include in your
38:34
message why you’re interested in a
38:36
specific role and then your appreciation
38:38
for your consideration getting a
38:41
referral or giving a referral can be a
38:44
lot of work I know I’ve given quite a
38:45
few so definitely giving them that
38:48
little bit of appreciation can go a long
38:50
way so I mentioned in the last slide
38:56
that you can request a recommendation
38:58
now a recommendation is going to live on
39:00
your profile I think I’ve got about ten
39:02
and I’ve given an about ten
39:04
recommendations before and this is where
39:07
you can look up the person who you know
39:11
on LinkedIn and you can click on their
39:12
profile and then they’ll have a little
39:14
recommend button you select your
39:17
relationship the position at the time so
39:19
to tell that story about why you’re
39:21
recommending the systems awesome here
39:23
where it’s doing all the work for you
39:25
where it’s saying connecting the dots
39:27
for those who are coming in to read this
39:30
recommendation
39:30
understand why you’re giving this
39:32
recommendation but you can ask current
39:36
or former managers current or former
39:38
colleagues people who have mentioned or
39:41
advised you professionally including
39:43
through nonprofit training so feel free
39:46
to leverage those nonprofit partners
39:49
that you have they know the quality of
39:51
work that you do and the beauty of this
39:54
is that once you have that
39:55
recommendation on your profile it lives
39:57
there forever so that when a recruiter
40:01
perhaps looks at your profile they can
40:03
read that recommendation and say you
40:05
don’t get that job well you don’t have
40:07
to ask for another recommendation
40:08
because it’s always living on your
40:11
profile
40:14
and when we talk about adding value and
40:18
engaging with your network here’s just
40:21
four tips so you can invest time in your
40:25
connections and you can request those
40:27
informational interviews highly
40:30
recommend you giving those informational
40:32
interviews to other people as well you
40:35
can like and share things that you’re
40:37
passionate about and that relate to your
40:39
profession keeping things professional
40:44
there of course you can join groups
40:47
groups are a great way I think there’s a
40:49
we have a little group for alumni from
40:52
my program in my year these are just
40:54
great places to chat to exchange
40:56
information you can create your own
40:59
groups really easy on LinkedIn so if you
41:02
want to really focus in and have almost
41:04
like accountability partners you can do
41:07
that or perhaps you just know that other
41:09
people we’re interested in the same
41:11
thing might share some things with you
41:12
you can join groups and lastly you can
41:16
give testimonials and recommendations to
41:18
others you got to give to get really
41:23
and here so last but not least and I
41:27
think I’m doing okay on time again feel
41:31
free to engage in the chat pod there so
41:34
let’s talk about searching and applying
41:35
for jobs on LinkedIn LinkedIn is gonna
41:38
do a lot of work for you to help bring
41:40
you things that you’re interested in
41:42
there’s just a few things that you want
41:44
to customize or can customize to help
41:46
you have that information come to you so
41:51
31 million plus job seekers visit
41:53
LinkedIn LinkedIn jobs every single week
41:58
now when I say LinkedIn jobs on LinkedIn
42:01
there’s a tab that says jobs so you can
42:03
click on the tab for jobs and this is
42:05
where you can begin to look for jobs and
42:08
areas and think areas like locations and
42:11
in positions that you’re interested in
42:15
so one thing you can do on LinkedIn is
42:18
set your career interests this is where
42:21
you can include potential job titles
42:23
that you’re interested in locations like
42:25
I mentioned and your career interests
42:28
and then you can just start to receive
42:30
relevant job suggestions so when I
42:34
initially I was actually put in a
42:36
position where when was this about a
42:38
year and some change ago the training
42:41
department was downsizing at pryzen and
42:45
so what I did was as soon as I heard
42:47
that I went on LinkedIn and then I put
42:52
in my career interests and then I turned
42:54
on this little button here if this is
42:56
let recruiters know you’re open so I
42:59
clicked on that and of course the job
43:02
market was a bit better her years some
43:04
change ago and I did get some recruiters
43:07
that reached out to me naturally and
43:09
although I didn’t end up getting hired
43:13
or even interviewed at some of those
43:14
places it was a good confidence booster
43:16
to know that I was moving in the right
43:18
direction of course I ended up doing
43:22
more research on LinkedIn and some other
43:25
places on myself and began to set up
43:28
those interviews for myself but it was
43:30
great to have those come to me
43:31
automatically I was actually really
43:33
surprised that by turning that but on
43:36
that I had
43:37
about two or three recruiters reach out
43:38
to me and so when you search for jobs in
43:47
this little area here I’m gonna
43:49
highlight this you can type in the name
43:52
of the profession that you’re interested
43:53
in for me it was training and
43:55
development and then you can search the
43:58
area that you’re interested in I did a
44:01
nationwide search myself but you can
44:05
hone in on any or zoom in on any area
44:08
that you’d like and it’ll begin to give
44:10
you results show you how many results
44:13
you get you can modify the relevance or
44:17
time how long it’s been posted things of
44:20
that nature you can get really creative
44:22
here and this I feel like is a skill the
44:25
first time you hop in you’re gonna
44:27
probably go with just the title and the
44:30
area but you’ll begin to look at things
44:32
like date posted company experience
44:35
level things that you can modify and
44:37
change it actually is kind of fun
44:41
because you have so much power and
44:43
control over what you want to see and it
44:46
can be really enlightening to see what’s
44:48
out there you can create job search
44:52
alerts this is really cool once you
44:54
create that search you can receive daily
44:57
alerts that are notified by email or
45:00
notification and app I really liked this
45:03
because I could start to see when
45:05
something would pop up in a new area
45:06
let’s say I was scoping out a new
45:09
location so Denver looked really cool
45:12
and their economy was booming at that
45:15
time and I think a lot of stuff is on
45:16
the rebound now so I would get alerts
45:20
jobs in Denver or a broader search would
45:24
pop up for me and this is really cool
45:27
because I didn’t have to do any
45:28
additional work to see those searches
45:30
they would just come to me so it really
45:32
started to reduce that cognitive load of
45:35
having to search for a job and I could
45:36
really just focus on my informational
45:38
interviews and getting to expand my
45:41
network and I do see a question in the
45:47
chat so yah mone
45:51
I am a travel advisor I have to update
45:53
my LinkedIn and so vine it happens for
45:57
sure I’ve definitely been in a position
45:59
where I block an update I mentioned
46:02
before if you set aside 20 to 30 minutes
46:04
every week maybe a little bit more
46:06
depending that’s big task of having to
46:09
update your profile will really be
46:11
reduced so try not to get overwhelmed
46:14
and look at it as this big elephant that
46:16
you have to eat but kind of
46:17
compartmentalize it too we have a couple
46:21
more questions Joe how do i narrow our
46:24
results to just physicians we’re a match
46:26
eight to ten of the schools they’re
46:28
looking for you know I’m not sure that
46:31
you can reduce it down to just skills
46:33
you can I’ll go back up one here so
46:39
these are some of the filters that you
46:41
have here under the jobs let me
46:44
highlight these so you can the filters
46:47
that you can use date posted company
46:50
experience level location and there
46:55
might be a couple more filters there I
46:57
have to peek at that so if we have time
46:59
at the end I can go in and peek to see
47:01
if we can zero in on skills it’s
47:05
important to mention and let me I’m
47:07
gonna actually look through my slides
47:08
here to see if I have it I don’t so it’s
47:12
important to mention that on LinkedIn
47:15
you can put the skills that you have so
47:20
that actually maybe I’ll pull up my
47:22
actual I’ll go ahead and pull up my
47:25
profile for everybody you can post your
47:29
skills on LinkedIn and this is a I’m
47:32
glad you mentioned this Gloria because
47:34
everybody can like then everybody can
47:39
post the skills that they have and I
47:41
think it’s gonna help to have a visual
47:47
you profile him all right so I’m gonna
47:53
blow this up so everybody can see it now
47:55
this is what you’ll see on your profile
47:57
if you scroll through I’m gonna go right
48:00
down to
48:02
skills and endorsements so here are some
48:06
of the skills that I have I have
48:08
telecommunications training sales and I
48:11
have even more so I have quite a few
48:14
skills here and people can go through
48:15
and click these to endorse you for these
48:18
now let’s say that you apply for a job
48:21
and that job has skills listed you’ll be
48:25
a better match for that job if you have
48:27
these skills listed now let’s say that
48:30
you look up a job and you don’t have
48:32
that skill so there’s a couple ways to
48:34
go ahead and get those skills now you
48:38
can use of course you can go to school
48:40
for those things which is why actually
48:43
one of the main reasons why I went from
48:46
training and development because there
48:48
were some skills that I knew I didn’t
48:50
have and so you can see that I listed
48:52
some of those skills up here and I want
48:56
to say there’s another section here to
48:59
where I can list some of that here we go
49:01
certifications and licenses so on
49:05
LinkedIn learning which is a separate
49:07
you do have to pay for LinkedIn learning
49:09
when you have LinkedIn learning if you
49:11
take a course it’ll automatically post
49:13
those skills once you’re finished for
49:15
the course to your profile now you can
49:18
manually add these by clicking on the
49:21
pencil here once you click though here
49:23
you can add new and you can even bring
49:26
to the top the ones that you want to
49:28
highlight
49:28
once you add some of those skills in it
49:31
will highlight you and show a better
49:34
match or a stronger match to potential
49:36
employers so I’m glad that you mentioned
49:38
skills I think to answer that question
49:42
by changing and adding the right skills
49:45
and endorsements here you’ll be a better
49:47
match for recruiters so thanks for that
49:51
question
49:51
aurilla and Kristy how are we doing in
49:54
the chat pod a couple more questions
49:55
came in how do you recommend having your
49:57
information out there for opportunities
50:00
that come up while being discreet with
50:02
your employer and because for this
50:05
example she’s always looking just it’s
50:09
good to be aware of what opportunities
50:10
are out there and she’s happy at her
50:12
current situation but she doesn’t want
50:14
her right right
50:16
to be to see that and and get you don’t
50:20
want to alarm your employer totally get
50:22
that it’s one of the beautiful things
50:24
about LinkedIn is it’s it’s not isolated
50:27
to looking for a job it’s a professional
50:30
network so I use and we’ll talk about
50:32
this a little bit later in the
50:33
presentation
50:35
there’s influencers that I follow I like
50:38
to learn from professionals in a given
50:41
industry that are doing great things and
50:45
there’s no shame in continually learning
50:48
from those in your profession or
50:49
professions that you admire sometimes
50:52
there’s professions that perhaps things
50:55
that I don’t do and won’t do but I like
50:57
to learn from them and be influenced by
50:59
professionals so you know it’s okay to
51:03
have a conversation about that and say
51:05
you know I use LinkedIn for this or
51:07
maybe bring it up in a conversation oh
51:09
there’s some really great content from
51:11
this influence or I read a great article
51:13
on LinkedIn if you do open yourself up
51:17
to recruiters contacting you that’s not
51:20
that’s not published to your entire
51:23
social network it’s just something that
51:25
recruiters can see so that’s not shared
51:27
with everybody constantly building
51:30
yourself up is really important
51:32
constantly learning from other
51:33
professions even at my last job we had a
51:36
culture of hey it’s it’s good to learn
51:38
from other trainers check out the
51:40
profiles from other trainers so you can
51:43
begin to build that culture yourself
51:45
being confident that that look you’re
51:47
always building yourself up you’re open
51:50
to building other people up it doesn’t
51:52
have to be about sneaking around and
51:54
getting a different job but I totally
51:58
understand how that could be like a
52:00
challenge too so just I would say back
52:04
to the original advice continue
52:05
developing yourself and be open about I
52:08
think that that’s powerful what are the
52:13
questions do you cut I think that was
52:15
the last question Dan had just shared I
52:17
asked a question if anyone else is a
52:18
hiring manager and regularly reads the
52:21
recommendations and his perspective as a
52:25
I believe as a hiring Mandarin
52:27
and talent acquisition Dan but sorry if
52:29
I’m wrong there so that they do look at
52:31
recommendation sometimes but the thought
52:33
is that sometimes people will only
52:35
approve and let their they’re the best
52:37
ones that they receive out there but
52:39
it’s a good sign if you have five or
52:41
more yeah absolutely
52:43
I when I first got my recommendations it
52:46
was I think it was also this was maybe
52:48
seven years ago I felt like it was hard
52:52
I really had to ask for people to do it
52:54
now the systems like super intuitive
52:56
super easy but sometimes you gotta give
52:59
to get you’ll notice I have ten on mine
53:01
but I’ve given nine and so that just
53:04
that back and forth and actually I oh
53:06
one of my previous colleagues I owe him
53:08
uh a recommendation as well something
53:11
you get better on there’s some great
53:13
articles about writing a good
53:14
recommendation as well so don’t be
53:17
afraid to get some coaching on writing
53:18
those recommendations it can be kind of
53:20
daunting especially if you’re doing it
53:22
at the end of the day and you’re like
53:23
mentally tired but definitely got to
53:26
give to get and Dan thanks for that
53:28
feedback Gloria you’re totally welcome
53:30
thanks for the question and what else we
53:34
got Christy I think that was the last
53:37
question so feel free to to move on and
53:40
any other last questions that kind of
53:42
pop up we can address those in the last
53:44
several minutes okay so moving on about
53:48
how we can look for jobs on here you
53:52
know
53:52
carve out a bit of time maybe you know
53:55
if you’re twenty minutes to work on your
53:57
LinkedIn profile to learn about others
53:59
and and and using the menus and things
54:01
like that just to kind of get used to it
54:03
that reoccurring you’ll find every
54:05
single time it’ll become you’ll know it
54:07
the system is very very intuitive but
54:09
the more that you use it the more you
54:11
may wake up and go oh I want to use this
54:13
filter you know you sleep on it a little
54:15
bit so have fun with it to dream big
54:18
it’s always fun to you know I really was
54:21
interested in doing this and when you
54:23
click on one of these jobs it’ll show
54:25
you the skills that you need and guess
54:26
what if you don’t have those skills no
54:28
big deal
54:29
start to learn those things LinkedIn
54:31
learning has a ton of really great stuff
54:33
on there I started using LinkedIn
54:35
learning back when it was lynda.com so
54:38
although I got my formal education
54:41
which I would never trade for anything
54:42
when it comes to those little skills and
54:45
little gaps that you might have LinkedIn
54:47
learning is really powerful for you know
54:49
when you when you look at this job I
54:50
really like this job but it has this
54:52
girl and this skill you can go in take
54:55
those courses at your own pace they they
54:59
always have little one-pagers that you
55:01
can print off and resource guides and
55:04
then they always have projects that you
55:06
can follow along with so it’s attainable
55:08
do it and do it do it maybe as a weekend
55:10
warrior project or something like that
55:12
but dream big have fun with your job
55:15
search and explore more about what these
55:19
jobs do and maybe you can bring it to
55:21
your own job too
55:22
so have fun with it I like to learn more
55:27
about companies when I had recruiters
55:30
reach out to me I had a couple that
55:33
reached out to me that I wasn’t familiar
55:34
with and I think a big part of any
55:37
company is its culture you want to know
55:39
who you’re working with is it a culture
55:41
that prioritizes self care and community
55:47
these are things that you can find out
55:49
by typing in the name of the company
55:51
here and then clicking on follow now
55:54
these companies will post things that
55:57
you can read through company culture you
55:59
name it whatever they decide to
56:00
highlight but it can be very telling and
56:03
you can always borrow from these things
56:05
I think it’s fun to follow companies and
56:08
learn more about what they do maybe you
56:10
want to borrow some of their ideas you
56:11
can always do that there’s also for
56:15
example Roosevelt has a LinkedIn too and
56:19
we post on there as well so it helps
56:21
keep you connected to your school as
56:23
well
56:29
and you can apply actively so a lot of
56:32
companies have this easy apply button
56:34
where once so you put in the work you
56:37
know every every week you’re putting a
56:39
little bit of work on your Linkedin and
56:41
you’re like oh you know what I think
56:42
it’s where I like it that easy apply
56:44
button is super cool you can just tap on
56:47
the EZ apply and then it’s gonna apply
56:49
for that job on LinkedIn for where
56:51
you’re real easy so applicants who apply
56:54
to jobs within the first three days of
56:57
posting are 13 percent more likely to
57:00
get the job now 13 percents actually a
57:02
pretty big number when you think about
57:04
the race to you know if Michael Phelps
57:06
won by 13 percent margin in the Olympics
57:09
you’d be like whoa holy cow
57:11
so put the odds in your favor and the
57:15
way to do this is that LinkedIn is gonna
57:16
alert you once you set up those alerts
57:18
it’ll alert you about a posting you say
57:20
I like that job and now you can quickly
57:22
hit that easy apply button and now
57:24
you’ve applied within the first three
57:26
days gotten in a bit early early bird
57:29
gets the worm
57:29
and now you set yourself up for that 13
57:32
percent advantage and so we’re at the
57:38
point of extra credit and kind of check
57:40
in on time here I’m okay to stay a
57:42
little bit longer but I know some people
57:43
may have to bounce this is being
57:45
recorded and don’t worry all these
57:46
resources will be sent to you I do see
57:49
some questions in the chat pod so top
57:54
I’m gonna read it do you have any
57:57
thoughts on content that people include
57:59
in their profiles that you consider
58:01
distracting or perhaps a waste of space
58:04
um you know everybody gets to have their
58:09
own opinion I keep mine professional I
58:12
try to think of like you know actually
58:15
I’ll go up to the mission and vision for
58:19
LinkedIn and this is like a great North
58:22
Star sorry I’m like clicking through all
58:24
these I realize that make slides when
58:26
you go back to our mission and you can
58:28
kind of think of this it’s to connect
58:30
the world’s professionals to make a more
58:31
productive and successful so if you
58:34
think like are you helping other people
58:36
be more productive and successful I
58:39
think that those are important it’s a
58:41
dynamic question
58:42
because I think we’re all finding that
58:45
we need to be to be a healthy person you
58:48
have to be authentic and so it depends
58:51
on on what you think makes people more
58:54
productive and more successful I would
58:57
keep it related to work but we’re really
59:00
dynamic people and maybe sometimes you
59:03
need to speak out about something that
59:04
might feel a little bit more personal if
59:07
something’s weighing on somebody and you
59:09
think posting about it on LinkedIn might
59:12
help them professionally well that’s
59:14
okay you can do that because to be a
59:17
professional person you’re a person
59:20
first so you know it’s really up to your
59:24
discretion on that a little bit of an
59:25
artwork there so thanks for that
59:30
question Thomas sorry if it didn’t seem
59:32
like specific enough but yeah I just
59:34
think about productive and successful I
59:36
think that’s really important and now
59:41
I’m gonna get to that last OCA I’m
59:43
probably gonna click out of here and
59:45
then scroll down that’ll make it there
59:47
we go that’s a lot faster and feel free
59:51
to keep those questions coming in there
59:59
we go so for extra credit I’m gonna show
60:04
you some cool stuff that you can do here
60:07
how we can explore schools explore
60:10
alumni you can join groups and then I
60:12
have a slide here on privacy settings so
60:15
exploring schools it’s a bit like
60:18
exploring companies so you can always
60:23
explore and learn a little bit more I
60:25
like to stay connected to Roosevelt see
60:27
what we’re posting I got updates about
60:29
this webinar some of the webinars that
60:31
are coming up so you can find more
60:34
information there by clicking on the
60:36
follow button and you can explore alumni
60:40
so under the school you can actually see
60:43
some information about the school so you
60:46
can see where people are moving what
60:48
they’re doing what some of the trends
60:50
are there and it’s kind of cool just to
60:52
get a little bit of information about
60:53
some of the alumni and see what they’re
60:56
doing
60:59
joining groups now this is a really
61:02
great way to engage being able to see
61:05
what others are up to and kind of having
61:08
this like digital informational
61:09
interview that’s one-sided just you
61:11
learning is one thing but to be able to
61:13
engage on current events things that are
61:16
working it’s great to have a discussion
61:18
so there are groups on LinkedIn and when
61:22
you type in in the text box up here you
61:25
have the ability to just focus in on
61:28
groups here so there’s a little group
61:30
filter that you can use under the
61:32
drop-down and then you’ll see some of
61:33
the groups that are out there that are
61:35
posting and sharing professional ideas
61:37
in areas that you’re interested in so
61:42
privacy settings the ball is in your
61:44
court and as far as like not just
61:47
privacy but when it comes to things that
61:50
pop up maybe you don’t want to have your
61:53
phone have an alert every time something
61:55
goes off you can customize these things
61:57
highly recommend that should pop into
61:59
these settings just read the room and
62:02
there’s a lot of in these menus so take
62:06
a look at them maybe take a look at them
62:07
again it helps to take a peek at these
62:11
more than once but you can change your
62:13
language I’m linked in your password you
62:16
can control your notification settings
62:18
as well we all know that we want to have
62:19
healthy amount of notifications so the
62:22
ball is really in your court but with
62:26
that I’m going to be open for questions
62:30
and really just thank yet remember I’ll
62:32
give you the resource kit that I have
62:35
see I have the resource kit here
62:39
remember you’re gonna get a link to
62:42
mentoring again I think helping somebody
62:45
else out is gonna be a way for you to
62:47
sharpen your skills as well that’s
62:49
important the entire deck you have
62:51
available to you a tip sheet and then
62:55
I’ve got some additional information for
62:57
you I’m building your brand and posting
63:00
on LinkedIn so thanks a ton for having
63:03
me and great to be a part of alumni with
63:06
you
63:09
Joe thank you so much for spending time
63:14
with us it just jam-packed our with so
63:17
much great information and we appreciate
63:19
it because it’s also important obviously
63:21
with the amount of folks that showed up
63:24
here today there’s a lot to learn and a
63:26
lot to soak in and apply and we
63:28
appreciate you sharing the deck with us
63:30
so and then a couple questions
63:31
additional questions come in we’ll be
63:33
able to share that share that PDF deck
63:36
with you and a post email post event
63:40
email follow-up also will include a
63:42
survey link where you can share just
63:45
your feedback in addition to topics that
63:47
you want to see for future webinars or
63:49
if there’s if you’re an expert in a
63:52
certain area and you’d like to present
63:53
like Joe feel free to reach out to me
63:55
too but Joe thank you again such rich
63:58
information with LinkedIn and we we
64:01
really appreciate your expertise and
64:03
insights here this afternoon yeah
64:05
