Why Join?
When students complete the Honors Program, they gain invaluable, lasting preparation for graduate school, professional success, and life as socially conscious leaders. In addition, they receive distinction during their academic careers, at graduation, and on their transcripts.
All members, throughout their Honors experience:
- Inquire, analyze, and synthesize using multiple disciplinary perspectives.
- Design, conduct, and present original research and/or creative projects.
- Apply coursework to an issue of civic importance.
- Collaborate effectively with multiple constituencies.
Requirements

- Actively earn a certain number of Honors credits each semester; numbers vary by student, depending on how many credit hours they’ve earned at the time of admittance. See catalog for specifics.
- Seek Honors Program advising each semester.
- Maintain a GPA of 3.0 (required upon graduation for designation), and earn a B- or higher in all of your Honors courses
- Complete an Honors Senior Thesis (HON 398 and 399)
- Honors advising, a requirement of membership, supplements and adds to your academic advising. We’ll work with you to make sure you’re meeting your Honors requirements, put you in touch with support and resources as needed, and also provide academic, graduate school, and professional advising. Schedule all advising appointments with Sarah Maria through the RU app.
General Information to Apply
Interested freshmen, transfer, and current RU students are welcome to apply through our essay-based application! Applications open February 01 and close July 01. All admitted students begin in the Fall term.
To apply, students must:
- Have earned fewer than 75 credit hours OR have at least three more semesters at RU.
- Have earned a 3.50 or higher GPA in high school or in college OR have a minimum GPA of 3.25.
- Submit the name and contact information of a teacher or faculty member who can speak to their academic abilities.
Transfer Students
Please note that certain transfer students earn RU Honors credit through membership in Phi Theta Kappa and completed associate degrees. Others do through degrees from and membership in area community college honors programs.
