Chicago Scholars seeks college counselors

Chicago Scholars is transforming the leadership landscape of our city by resolving fundamental barriers to success for academically driven students who are first-generation college-goers and/or from under-resourced communities. Through college counseling, mentoring, and by providing a supportive community to our Scholars through each phase of our program: College Access (Launch), College Persistence (Lift), and Career & Leadership Development (Lead), we ensure that they realize their full potential as students and leaders.

86% of Chicago Scholars graduate college within 6 years. Per the UChicago Consortium on School Research, only 49% of their peers earn a degree within 6 years. Upon graduation, our Scholars move into leadership positions across Chicago, helping to drive the economic future of their communities and our city.

Position Summary

Chicago Scholars seeks college counselors. As a CS College Counselor, your work serves as the bedrock of our organization’s mission. You will leverage your professional expertise combined with our comprehensive, research-based college counseling curriculum to ensure that every Chicago Scholar has the knowledge, resources, and support they need to matriculate to a college that matches and/or exceeds their academic qualifications and fits their social, emotional, cultural and financial needs as well. This position involves communicating on a regular basis (sometimes weekly) with Scholars via phone and email, scheduling monthly in-person meetings with them (and their parents/guardians, at certain key times of the year), tracking their progress through the college admissions and financial aid process, encouraging and motivating them to stay on track with admissions deadlines, and advocating for extra support or interventions to the CS Counseling Team as needed.

While your primary focus will be guiding and supporting Scholars, you will also be part of a 40+ person college counseling team composed of other dynamic, passionate college access professionals. This team meets quarterly to exchange ideas and best practices, problem-solve, learn new technologies and systems, and network for professional development.

All CS College Counselors are part-time, contractual employees. There are two types of CS College Counselors:

  • Caseload Counselor: CCs with a year-long caseload of 16 or 24 Scholars.
  • Floater Counselor: CCs without an assigned caseload. Instead, you will meet with any Scholars who are unable to schedule time with their assigned CC that month.

(Please indicate in your cover letter which role you are interested in.)

College Counselors report to, and are supported by, the Managers of College Counseling. The entire college counseling program is overseen by the Managing Director of College Access.
